It's been a minute since we caught up. I'm not really sure how to start this thing up again, so this may feel a little long, a little rambling as I collect and organize my thoughts.
I've been looking for somewhere to write again, not for any specific purpose. Mostly just to have a running log of thoughts and ideas as life marches ever forward. The past year has reignited a lot of my passion for taking photos by way of rediscovering thousands of shots on an old hard drive that I thought had been lost. Those photos are over a decade old now, and even though I'll probably never publish most of them, it warms my heart to look back through them and see all of the people and places I've known over the years again.

My last blog was in 2017, and to say that a lot has changed in the 8+ years since then would be a massive understatement. I mean, we all went through the pandemic together, right? The past 5 years has simultaneously felt like 1 year and a decade all rolled into one. I got married, bought a house in Portland, found a good job, and have really just been in the lab since COVID initially hit. I was actually in Seattle for a yoyo contest when the plane with the first confirmed U.S. passenger landed at SEATAC. We were all watching the news in the hotel lobby, mostly cracking jokes about the whole thing and not realizing what a whirlwind we were in for. Spooky stuff, thinking back.
I think my recent search for somewhere to write again has been spurred by this weird wormhole that we've collectively experienced time through. I've spent a lot of hours on a variety of hobbies and feel compelled to share my experiences, the things I've found that work for me, and the failures I've experienced these past 5 years. I don't just shoot photos all of the time - I still play yoyo, I play video games, I read, I play sports, I camp in my vintage Shasta trailer and my two dogs, my wife and I are in the process of closing on our 3rd house since 2019, I moved from the city to the middle of bumfuck nowhere, I've traveled the world, and I'm currently learning Japanese and Chess on Duolingo. 425 day streak and going strong, baby!

All that to say that choosing a specific theme or topic for this blog is impossible. I have too many things that I love to do to focus on just one. And let's be honest - photography is only a thing because of the other interesting things in the world to photograph. I can't count the number of times that I've rolled my eyes because of some gear-obsessed youtuber popping up on autoplay and only showing footage or photos of their camera equipment. That's not interesting. Being a photographer isn't inherently interesting. It's the subject matter that you surround yourself that makes the work interesting and worthwhile. Go outside.
I guess we'll just have to see where this goes. I don't have a list of topics to write about, I don't have much of a plan, I'm just trying to get words down on the page more often - even if nothing is happening. And I've got some exciting news I'm waiting to share later this year which will hopefully give some more shape to this over time. For now, let's just take it easy. The world is loud enough as it is.
